This came out in 1986 and was the first rap song to reach the top 5 on the charts & essentially helped rap go mainstream before the Beastie Boys album became the first #1 later that year. It also revived Aerosmith’s career, as they hadn’t had a hit since the late 70s. Rick Ruben of Def Jam was the one that pushed for the collab. Run DMC weren’t Def Jam artists per se, but they were affiliated since Run & Russell Simmons are brothers. Rick was behind a lot of the hip hop hits from that era, including being a big influence on the Beastie Boys Licensed to Ill album. Aerosmith’s biggest song is Dream On (also sampled on Eminem’s Sing for the Moment), but they had a ton of hits in the late 80s and 90s (Sweet Emotion, Rag Doll, Love in an Elevator, Cryin’, Crazy, I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing, etc, etc). Definitely check out more Run DMC too, as hip hop today wouldn’t be the same without their contribution. Their song My Adidas also lead to their deal with Adidas, which was the first of its kind for any musician to make money via brand deals. Much like Jordan did with the shoe for athletes, their deal opened the door for other artists.

He is very popular right now keep going down the rabbit hole that is Ren his fans will be showing up shortly once they catch on you are doing Rens music. Next his track Hi Ren should be done without question. When everyone starts commenting you will learn all you will need to know.

How familiar are you with The Beastie Boys? Because that's another fun hip/hop/rock rabbit hole to go down. Listen to the storytelling in Paul Revere. Like Slick Rick, who you should also familiarize yourself with if you don't (La Di Da Di, Children's Story).

One of the first hip-hop/rap songs to chart, mostly because of the collaboration. You should look up the story about how this song came to be. RunDMC had no idea about this Aerosmith song, but were given the lyrics and told to rap it. They did. And it hit hard! Like nothing we'd heard before. My husband, a white guy from the midwest, tells of the time when this song came out, he was working at McDonald's. Some kids walked in when this song was playing, and of course husband knew the words because he was a hard rock fan, and knew of Aerosmith's original. The kids were shocked. Always check out who sampled who when a new song comes out, because many have snips of songs that have been around for 80 or 100 years.

Marshall Mathers had a traumatic childhood. His father was not around, his mother was an abusive alcoholic drug addict. He grew up in poverty, in a trailer park in Detroit. Bullied and picked on. His entire life. In 1996 he released his first album, infinite. He sold a thousand records, most of them out of the truck of his car. He was so upset with the results that he created his evil alter ego slim shady and released his second album Slim Shady EP. He made 500 of those records and sold about 250 of them . He was living in a high crime area at the time with his young daughter and her mother and was fed up with his situation . He went to California for a rap battle and gained the attention of Dr Dre. He sent him a copy of Slim Shady EP. Less than 2 years later, in 1999 he released slim shady LP and sold over 5 million records. He was immediately ridiculed for his lyrics and was black balled on MTV. The president of the United States called for him being canceled giving EM the ammo for a great career. Listen to “who knew”.

I wonder what the reaction to it was when it first came out. 6:20 White people rolled with it. Black people rolled away from it, drive-by style. White people purchased the sound, making him rich and famous. Black people gangstered the sound, making him broke and infamous. It happened a lot, still does.

Elvis’ wife Priscilla left him in 1972, taking their young daughter with her, & they were divorced in 73, so I imagine he had gone through really feeling the words of this song. That might have been an emotional tear, but could also have been sweat.

This was a great Elvis song to play at parties in the late 60s & early 70s. Everyone loved Elvis, & even though we lived in New Zealand & never saw Elvis in concerts, we loved it when a new Elvis record came out, & that was all the excuse we needed to have a party.

Jane H commenting ….. I find this so hard to watch, & I always end up crying, knowing how much Elvis was struggling health wise. He was short of breath, yet he still managed to do a spellbinding performance & that voice was so powerful. His final performance before passing away just 8 weeks later. My dear Elvis, you thought you would be forgotten. How very wrong you were. 47 years since you left us, but you are still loved so much, & a whole new generation is re-discovering you & enjoying your music. You won’t ever be forgotten. This was the Righteous Brothers song, but Elvis did a recording of it, which they would have been pleased about, as they would have got the royalties off every record of Elvis’ that sold, & that would have been a Lot. Elvis usually contacted singers when he wanted to record their songs, & I imagine they were happy about that, because Elvis sold more records than any other singer.

Jane H commenting ….. Elvis was a very sick man & just weeks away from death. He was short of breath during this concert, & exhausted, but still managed to have such power in his voice. Like a great many of his long-time fans (59 years for me), it is hard to watch, knowing he died a short time after this, at just 42 years old.

1.5 Billion (yes, Billion) people worldwide watched the Aloha from Hawaii concert. It was the very first (ever) performance sent via satellite all over the world. I watched it here in New Zealand, as a young woman. It was such a magical concert, & the public full-dress rehearsal the day before had just as many people in the audience (several thousand), as the actual concert had. At the rehearsal, people gave a donation at the door, enabling people who would not have been able to afford to see the actual concert to see the great Elvis Presley in action. The donations raised money for the Hawaiian Cancer society …. $75,000, which was a huge sum of money in 1973. I remember this concert as if it was yesterday.

Jane H commenting …. Elvis moved to the music. He doesn’t follow a format. He just moves & his fans absolutely went crazy when he did that. He is now a man of 35 years old, so taking himself a little more seriously than when he was younger, but still giving his fans what they want, & moving his body with the music in whatever way he wanted to. His moves were not choreographed. He did what he wanted & what felt natural to him. This is a bit of a silly song, so Elvis is just engaging with his fans along the way, as he often does. He seldom takes himself too seriously. He has worldwide fame, so he can afford to have some fun on stage when he wants to. It’s not always about getting out there & just singing. It about not taking yourself too seriously all the time, & it’s about enjoying yourself while you’re performing, knowing that he is making his fans very happy. He could have walked out on stage & blown his nose, & his fans would have screamed with delight, he just had that much charisma & we all loved him, male & female. Sometimes, as a performer, you just have to let yourself have fun. Polk Salad Annie is actually one of his fans favourite songs, because he moves in it with such energy, & they loved that. If you listen to the reaction of the audience at the end of this performance, you will hear thunderous applause. He knew what his fans loved & he was spontaneous. You have to remember that a lot of these people came back to see Elvis perform again & again, so he liked to do things a bit different & sing different songs at each performance, unlike nowadays when singers or groups come on stage & perform the same old, same old again & again & again.

Jane H commenting ….. Elvis at 21 years old. Oh my goodness, he was so beautiful. I would normally use handsome for a man, but Elvis was beautiful. And he did something no-one else had ever done before …. He moved/danced about while he was singing. He had actually hit fame almost three years prior to this. He was doing a screen test for his forthcoming movies, because they needed to make sure he was going to look as good on the big screen as he did off it. Elvis had everything. The looks. The talent. The body. The moves. The energy. The charisma. The personality. And that Southern charm. Becoming a fan of yours too. Enjoying your Reactions.

Jane H commenting …. If you managed to get kissed by Elvis, that was something that you Never forgot. This man wanted to make his fans happy, & he put some fun into it by playfully pretending as if he was going to kiss the guy he was shaking hands with. He was always the southern gentleman, full of charm, & his fans adored him …. & 47 years after his death, they still do. I’ve been a fan of his since I was 15, way back in 1967. Shame I lived in New Zealand, because I certainly would not have objected to being kissed by Elvis Presley. Of course, if Covid had been around back then, there wouldn’t have been any kissing going on, but these were different times ….more relaxed. Loved your Reaction.

Jane H commenting …. Elvis was a multi-talented man, & a very good-looking man as well. He had the leading roll in 31 Hollywood movies, before becoming bored with it all, & returning to his great love of performing before a live audience. So lots of singing & dancing in many more movies, & I love seeing them. Great Reaction from you.

This was the early 1970s & Elvis was beginning to have some health issues, which in the end led to his death at age 42. He also had developed glaucoma in both eyes, at an early age, so that the lights had to be positioned in a certain way, because they would hurt his eyes. Glaucoma causes pressure on the eyes, which is very painful. Elvis was actually quite a shy man, & an introvert. His stage performances show a man who is confident, but yes, he got nervous before his concerts. Members of his staff, bodyguards & musicians, have often said that Elvis would bow his head in prayer, & when asked what he was doing, he would reply that he was asking God to bless the concert & to bless all the people watching it. He was a very spiritual man, & a humble man, in spite of his worldwide fame & his lavish lifestyle. He was also a very caring & giving man. He would say that God had blessed him with money, so that he could bless others with it. So yes, he did get nervous before his performances, but I think once he got on stage, those nerves would vanish, & the performer would take over.

  • @davidharrison1523

Elvis wasn’t just a singer. He was an entertainer & he loved making his fans happy. He enjoyed interacting with them & he loved helping people when they needed help. He bought houses & cars for people, sometimes complete strangers. If he read of something bad happening to someone he would often act on it. He read of a solo mother whose home burned down, & it was just before Christmas. So he told one of his staff to rent an apartment for the lady & her children, for six months, & to fully furnish it with everything they might need, & to buy toys, books & clothing for the children. When he was asked if they should tell the lady it was him doing this, he said no. Just tell them it was Santa. His heart was so caring. He said that God had blessed him with a way to earn lots of money, so that he could give it to those in need. He supported cancer charities & childrens’ hospitals & when he was younger, he had helped fund the Martin Luther King movement, enjoying several private phone calls with Martin Luther King himself. He was a very spiritual man, always seeking for the greater purpose of his life. He never forgot that he had grown up in abject poverty, one of four very poor white families living within a very poor black community. He gave so much joy to billions of people worldwide, & yet he was a humble man who thanked God for everything he had. He was 42 years old when he passed, but he had been very sick for quite some time, really starting to go downhill in his health from around 1974. But he would not stop doing concerts & touring, because he never wanted to disappoint his fans. It was said that he died of a heart attack or cardiac arrest, in his home in August 1977. His mother had died of a heart attack at age 47, & two cousins had died of heart issues in their forties. His only child, Lisa-Marie Presley died of a cardiac arrest at age 54. He thought that nobody would remember him when he was gone, but here we are, 47 years after his death, & millions of people still visit his home, Graceland, every year, & billions of people worldwide still love him & miss him. There will Never be another Elvis. No-one will even come close. Thank you for your Reaction to this beautiful performance.

Trouble is one of my favourite early Elvis songs, so it’s a shame he’s not singing the whole song, but a great performance of Guitar Man. Elvis was such a gifted singer that he could have performed on a street corner & still been brilliant. GOAT.

During this early period, Elvis was censored from the waist down, when being televised ….. because a great many people thought his hip & leg movements were too sexual & too suggestive. Elvis himself thought it was funny. He had a great sense of humour, & you will often hear him popping in different, funny words while he’s singing …. Just a line here & there. His backup singers never knew what to expect when he was performing. His movements were not choreographed. His body just moved naturally to the music he was singing, & his fans, especially the girls & women, would just go wild.

Elvis was 33 years old here. It’s his Comeback into live stage performances, after making 31 movies, most of which he sang in. He was more than ready to quit acting, as he was always type-cast in those movies, same old same old, & he was totally frustrated & bored. He was considered a dangerous influence in his earlier days, from when he first shot to fame as an 18 year old, because he had grown up in abject poverty, as one of four very poor white families in a very poor black community. So his childhood was spent with his black friends, listening to gospel music, which was always his favourite til the end. He died at the age of 42, after his health went into a steady decline from around 1973 until he was found dead in his home in August 1977. Elvis always had black female singers as his backup singers & he would refuse to go on stage when authorities said he could not perform with black people …. So they would have to back down & allow him to perform with his black singers. In a time when that part of America had strict segregation laws, Elvis flouted them. He refused to conform to that racism, & he refused to stop his ‘suggestive’ body movements on stage, which had never been seen before in the 1950s/early 1960s. So he was arrested during a performance & threatened with jail. Knowing there would be riots in the streets if they did that, he was quickly drafted into the army & shipped off to Germany for two years. The authorities figured he would fade into obscurity, but they were wrong. He came back & reinvented himself as a to Hollywood actor & made 31 movies, then he had had enough & decided he would go back into what he loved most, performing before an audience. He was very upset when Martin Luther King was assassinated, & then Robert Kennedy too. He wanted to make a public statement, but his manager would not allow him to, so he stayed up all night after doing a televised performance, & with a songwriter in his entourage, this ‘protest’ song was created. Rehearsed all day, & then went back on stage & at the end of the televised show, he sang this amazing song, in which he hopes he can walk hand in hand with his brothers & that the world can find peace together.
